Over the past many years, I’ve added bits of home automation around the house. Starting with the Google Assistant. Want I didn’t want was lots of hubs, for lots of different products. But it seems that’s the way of things in home automation.
Initially, I bought some hub-less light bulbs from LIFX, very good, but also pricey. Then added Logitech Pop smart buttons because as much as you try telling the wife, and kids to talk to the house to get the lights on and off, they don’t. I put POP buttons next to all the light switches as a mechanical bridge between house and humans.
Some years later I have some different hub-less bulbs for the kitchen, to replace the GU10 240v electricity hungry LED’s that were there with smart LED bulbs. They connect up via the Smart Life app. But the Logitech POP buttons sadly don’t talk to Smart Life. It seems they are also end of life, so will never get connected to Smart Life either.
But Logitech POP can talk to IFTTT.com, I long since gave up on IFTTT as they want £25 a year now. But I only want two operations. Turn the Kitchen lights on and off. That fits under the FREE applet count.
I set about linking Logitech POP app to IFTTT, then Smart Life - and it all came to a halt as IFTTT could not see my Smart Life bulbs. Time for some Duck Jitsu - I get I’m not the first to find this out, and sure enough others have found a way around it.
You may not be able to get IFTTT to see the bulbs, but it can see any scenes you may have created. I created two scenes, on for kitchen lights on, the other for off. Now I can connect IFTTT based on a single press to activate the scene to turn on the lights, and a double press to activate the scene for off.
What would be nice, would be if the scenes were able to toggle the light’s current state. Then it would only require one scene - toggle the lights on or off. It looks like Smart Life/Tuya used to support toggling (called reverse), but that option has disappeared from new apps.
